Our Apartment

Thanks to the Internet, we were able to explore many options for places to stay while still in Chicago. There were many very nice, affordable apartments available in Madrid. We settled on one we found at Homelidays.com for two reasons: (1) a good shower, and (2) a thermostat we could control.

Our address was Calle Bravo Murillo, #12, about half-a-block from the Quevedo metro station. Bravo Murillo is a major street, one way (south), but since we were on the top (fifth floor), the street noise was not a problem.

The building is going through a lot of improvments. A new entryway with a marble foyer is being installed (seemed to be one person working on it), so it was a bit dusty and industrial at times.

The apartment had a living/dining area, two bedrooms, a kitchen, and bathroom. It was quite comfortable, and very warm (once we got the thermostat to work!).

Raquel Roman, the agent from whom we rented, met us promptly at the doorway at 10:00 on our arrival to let us in, and checked us out right at 9:00 on the day we left (very punctual, which I appreciate).

Both bedrooms had large windows with French doors and big, thick wooden shutters to close at night. The kitchen was galley style, and was well equipped.

I never tired of looking out my window. Across the street was this wonderful old atmospheric building. And the street scene was ever-changing.

Immediately across from us on the ground floor was a tea shop, a shoe store, and Mallorca an amazing pastry, candy, bakery, wine, deli, restaurant store all rolled into one. We showed how foreign we were when we tried to go in and buy some wine and cheese. No, you don't take things off the shelf and go to the counter to pay for them! You collect a little card from the front counter, go to each section and point out what you want; the clerk in each area takes your purchase, writes it on the card, then wraps and packages it and takes it to the front counter. When you are done shopping, you carry your card to the checkout counter and pay!
