My Vacation Diary

December 22-29

On the 22, we took our rented Vauxhall (medium-size) sedan, manual (which meant I couldn't drive, since I don't know how to drive a manual), and headed to Cornwall. Getting out of London was a guessing game, but it worked, and once on the M-4 and M-5 highways, we had no trouble. I really appreciated Grenadas (nice bathrooms), but Tom said they sold the worst coffee he'd ever had.

Through the Cotswolds and Bristol, we left the M for the A highways, which were still pretty normal, despite driving on the "wrong side" of the road. But then we hit the B-00 roads, and then the B-000 roads. Man, talk about narrow! After passing through Plymouth (beautiful bay and bridge), we finally made our way into St. Austell (home of the "Eden Project" biome), where we had to survive the badly-directed roundabout that led to Mevagissey.

Mevagissey is an absolutely beautiful small town. It covers several small, rolling hills around a low-lying harbor. I don't know the population, but it seemed pretty empty. We had to walk and drive down the main street frequently (picture below).

It finally occurred to me, a month after returning, what was so "odd" about Mevagissey: no MacDonalds, Burger King, KFC, Pizza Hut. NO fast food joints at all! Shocking! It was great!

You see that guy? He's walking down the side of the main street. He should be behind the yellow line, which represents the pedestrian's walkway! There are "layovers" every few hundred yards, so if two cars meet head-on, one can pull over and let the other pass.

We got very adept at walking up and down this street, since our cottage was on the other side of the hill! It got much steeper as you went higher.
