My Vacation Diary

December 22-29 continued

Once we drove over the hill, we found our rental cottage, "Puffin Burrow," an 18th-century fisherman's cottage.

Puffin Burrow was on the edge of a harbor for a small boat-building town called Port Mellon. Surrounding Port Mellon were hills that turned in to cliffs when they got close to the sea's edge.

The main road runs right along the harbor, and we discovered it was often closed at high tide due to the pounding waves!

Here is the entrance to our cottage. The ground floor entered into a living room with couch, chairs, table, TV, and heater. In the shed (right of picture) was the satellite dish, which would only work if the shed door were open--and even then, it mainly received German TV, for some reason (seems it has to do with old reception modes and will be replaced soon). From the living room, you took one step up to the kitchen and then a stairway to the second floor, with the comfortable bedroom and bath.

Other than the "hand-held shower" (which didn't work well, but is being replaced), the cottage was very enjoyable. Much to my surprise, it was even warm, despite our chilly weather!

About six feet from the front door was a sharp, rocky drop to the ocean....
